Infrared thermometers are used for temperature checks with immediate response times.
Suitable for temperature measurements on solid, opaque, non-reflective surfaces.
A characteristic feature of infrared thermometers is the focal distance.
It is defined as the ratio between the distance of the instrument from the surface to be measured and the diameter of the measured surface.
D:S = 7:1, D:S = 11:1 up to D:S = 50:1
Example: with a D:S = 11:1, on a surface 33 cm away from the instrument, an area of 3 cm diameter will be measured.
Another characteristic of infrared thermometers is their emissivity.
It is defined as the fraction of energy radiated by that material compared to the energy radiated by a black body at the same temperature. It is a measure of a material's ability to radiate energy.
Emissivity depends on factors such as temperature, angle of emission, wavelength and surface finish of the body being observed. In general, metals have rather low and increasing emissivity with temperature, while non-metals (in which metal oxides should also be included) have relatively high and decreasing emissivity with increasing temperature.
Emissivity is therefore a peculiar characteristic of each material, and when using an IR thermometer it will be important to assess what value is set on the instrument.
0.95 is the default value set on almost all of these instruments and corrected for various fields of application.
There are five models of thermometers available on our site:
- TM-969: Measurement range -30.0...+1,000°C, focal length D:S = 50:1, with auxiliary input for thermocouple K. Emissivity adjustable between 0.10 and 1.00
- TM-959: Measuring range -33.0...+305°C, focal length D:S = 7:1, emissivity adjustable between 0.20 and 1.00. Measurement on 2 targets with 2 cm diameter at 14 cm distance.
- Scantemp 450: Measuring range -60.0...+500°C, focal length D:S = 11:1, emissivity adjustable. With auxiliary input for K thermocouple.
- Scantemp 410: Measuring range -33.0...+500°C, focal length D:S = 11:1, adjustable emissivity, more ergonomic
- Body Temp: Body and surface thermometer. Measuring range 32...42.5°C. Backlit LCD display with Max. value. Operating distance between 5 and 15 cm.
